Soda ash (sodium carbonate) is used to raise the pH in the pre-soak before you dye your fabric, helping to fix the dyes to the fibres of the fabric. This is an essential step to ensure that your tie dye is colourfast and that the dyes are permanent, so PLEASE DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!

The ratio for the soda ash dye fixer soaking solution is 1 cup of soda ash to 4 litres of water.
